Brendan Gaughan joins Richard Childress Racing in 2013 as the full-time driver of the No. 62 Chevrolet Silverado in the Camping World Truck Series. 2013 is Gaughan’s 14th season of competition in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series and second season running under the Richard Childress Racing banner.
In a NASCAR career that has spanned the course of 16 seasons, Gaughan has amassed 17 career wins, 10 pole awards 72 top-five and 125 top-10 finishes and two series championships spread out among the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, NASCAR Nationwide Series, Camping World Truck Series, NASCAR K&N Pro Series West and NASCAR Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series.
Introduced to racing at an early age after watching his father compete on the off-road racing circuit, the second generation driver has gained experience in NASCAR’s top three series, Grand-Am, CORR, SODA and SNORE. Gaughan made his first competitive laps at the age of 15 in SNORE Midnight Special in a Class 10 buggy, winning the event with his co-driver JC Dean.
Prior to becoming a full-time race car driver, the ambitious teenager was recruited by Georgetown University to play football. While in college, Gaughan found himself venturing out to other sports joining the Georgetown Hoyas men’s basketball team as a walk-on player. Gaughan played from 1994-1997 with NBA greats such as Allen Iverson, Othella Harrington, Don Reid, Jahidi White and Jerome Williams. The team made it to the Big East Tournament championship, and played in three NCAA Tournaments going to the Sweet Sixteen twice and the Elite 8 once. While at Georgetown, Gaughan also obtained a BSBA in Management with a specialization in Human Resources.
Driving for one of his childhood heroes, Walker Evans, Gaughan made his Camping World Truck Series debut in 1997 and completed a partial schedule in the series from 1997 through 2001 before competing full time from 2002 through 2008, and again in 2011. Gaughan claimed his first Camping World Truck Series victory at Texas Motor Speedway in June 2002 and grabbed his first pole award at Auto Club Speedway in September of 2003. He also holds a two-year unbeaten streak of four consecutive Camping World Truck Series victories at Texas Motor Speedway (2002 and 2003) and earned 2002 Camping World Truck Series Rookie of the Year honors.
During his 13-year Camping World Truck Series career, Gaughan has accumulated eight victories, three pole awards, 37 top-five and 67 top-10 finishes in 195 starts since his first series appearance in 1997. He currently ranks 15th on the all-time Camping World Truck Series wins list and 11th on the all-time Camping World Truck Series career starts list.
On top of his successes in the Camping World Truck Series, Gaughan drove full time in the K&N Pro Series West in 2000 and 2001, Nationwide Series in 2009 and 2010, Sprint Cup Series in 2004 and made starts in the Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series in 2009 and 2011. Collectively the driver accumulated nine victories, seven pole awards, 36 top-five and 58 top-10 finishes in 170 starts and brought home the championship title in the K&N Pro Series West in 2000 and 2001.
The Las Vegas native joined Richard Childress Racing as a driver in the Nationwide and Camping World Truck Series in 2012, running partial seasons in each series. During his inaugural season with RCR, Gaughan collected three top-five and five top-10 finishes in five Nationwide Series event and four top-five and top-10 finishes in the Camping World Truck Series.
Aside from racing, Gaughan is also part owner in Mobile Media (a mobile billboard company) and The Rusty Pickle (a gourmet food truck). Taking what he learned from being raised around the casino business, he is also part of the ownership group at Airport Slot Concessions Inc., the company that provides the slot machines at the McCarron International Airport. As if his plate wasn’t full enough, the married father of two still finds time to help out at the family business, South Point Hotel & Casino, and is also a Divemaster for Lake Norman Scuba in Mooresville, N.C.
In 2013, Gaughan will be reunited with his former crew chief Shane Wilson. Gaughan’s eight Camping World Truck Series victories all came with Wilson atop the pit box. The duo has unfinished business to take care of in 2013, after the Camping World Truck Series driver championship slipped through their fingers back in 2003. The pair heads into the new season more determined than ever to bring home the title that eluded them years ago.
