Brown New RCR Director of Licensing, Spicer Takes On New Role
WELCOME, N.C. (Jan. 19, 2006) -- Mike Brown has been named director of licensing for Richard Childress Racing (RCR), replacing Chuck Spicer who has assumed the new position of director of competition business operations.
Brown is responsible for all aspects of RCR’s licensing programs. He has been involved in the sales, marketing and licensing end of the NASCAR industry for more than a decade, most recently in a three-year stint as director of sales and marketing with Team Caliber. Prior to that, he spent more than four years as director of licensing for International Speedway Corporation (ISC), establishing and then supervising the sales, marketing, licensing and purchasing activities of its Charlotte office. He also was an executive with Jebco Sportswear and Victory Lane Merchandising, both in Charlotte, and Sports Design and Sports Image, both in Harrisburg, N.C. Brown earned a B.A. in Business Management in 1988 from North Carolina State University.
“Mike’s experience, drive and enthusiasm will carry RCR to a new level as NASCAR continues to grow and provide new licensing opportunities,” said Richard Childress, president and CEO of RCR. “The purchase of Action Performance by ISC and SMI (Speedway Motorsports Incorporated) has created a new playing field for the business side of the industry and Mike’s responsibility will be to take advantage of the right opportunities.”
Spicer’s new responsibilities include RCR’s driver development and diversity programs, team travel, engine department business opportunities, and to serve as the liaison between the competition and business sides of the company. He served as RCR’s licensing director since moving from Bill Davis Racing in December 2000. Spicer’s other motorsports industry experience comes from more than a decade of marketing and promotions with Petty Enterprises and First Brands Corporation, the maker of STP oil and fuel additives. He earned a B.S. in Business Management in 1984 from Northern State University in South Dakota.
“Chuck has been around racing a long time and he knows a lot about the industry,” said Childress. “He ran our licensing program for the past four years and we felt he was the right person to move into this new position. He’ll be working with companies that supply products to us as well as being responsible for our driver development and diversity programs. Having him on point for these and other programs will be a great benefit to RCR.”
Richard Childress Racing (www.rcrracing.com) has earned more than 130 victories and nine NASCAR championships, including six in the NEXTEL Cup Series with the legendary Dale Earnhardt. It was the first organization to win championships in the NEXTEL Cup Series, Busch Series and Truck Series. Its 2006 NEXTEL Cup Series lineup includes Clint Bowyer (No. 07 Jack Daniel’s), Kevin Harvick (No. 29 GM Goodwrench/Reese’s) and Jeff Burton (No. 31 Cingular Wireless). Its Busch Series lineup includes Clint Bowyer (No. 2 ACDelco) and a yet-to-be-announced program for the No. 21 team that won the 2003 NASCAR Busch Series Owner Championship.
