Clint Bowyer, No. 07 Jack Daniel's Chevrolet Daytona 500 Preview
NOTES:
• This Week’s Race Car at Daytona International Speedway … Clint Bowyer will pilot Chassis
No. 187 from the Richard Childress Racing (RCR) stable. This is a brand new Jack Daniel’s Chevrolet, hand-crafted for the Daytona 500.
• A Sign of Things to Come … Bowyer was the Raybestos Rookie of the Race in last year’s Daytona 500. The 27-year-old driver finished sixth in his very first NEXTEL Cup Series restrictor-plate race, immediately proving his prowess on Daytona’s high-banks. He went on to finish second in the 2006 Rookie of the Year standings and ultimately turned in four top-five and 11 top-10 finishes over the course of his freshman season.
• RCR Rocks Daytona … Dating back to 1986, RCR has won seven poles and owns 22 total victories at DIS, including 10 straight (1990-1999) Twin 125 wins with Dale Earnhardt. All totaled, RCR has won five Bud Shootouts, 13 Twin 125 qualifying races, two Pepsi 400s and one Daytona 500. Additionally, Dale Earnhardt Jr., won the February 2002 NASCAR Busch Series (NBS) race at Daytona driving a car fielded by RCR.
• The Fast Way Around … While serving as Kevin Harvick’s crew chief at the 2002 Pepsi 400, Bowyer’s crew chief, Gil Martin, captured the pole after Harvick posted a fast lap of 48.638 seconds (185.041 mph).
• Potent Plate Racer … In six starts at Daytona, including NEXTEL Cup and Busch Series competition, Bowyer boasts an impressive seventh-place finishing average. The Emporia, Kan., native has yet to finish worse than 12th at DIS and has earned two top-five and five top-10 finishes at the 2.5-mile superspeedway.
• Grinding out the Preseason … During January, Bowyer and both of his race teams – the No. 07 NEXTEL Cup team and the No. 2 Busch Series team – ground out a rigorous testing schedule. From Jan. 15-17 Bowyer and the Jack Daniel’s team tested at DIS and two days later, he was back for the Busch Series test with the BB&T Chevrolet. The No. 07 team spent Jan. 25 testing the “Car of Tomorrow” at South Georgia Motorsports Park – a half-mile oval located in Cecil, Ga. - and the following Sunday headed for Las Vegas for two more days to shake down their intermediate cars. Bowyer posted the ninth-fastest overall speed during the Vegas test, lapping the 1.5-mile Sin City oval in 28.94 seconds (184.351 mph). The BB&T Busch team rounded out the preseason testing schedule Feb. 5-6 with two days of hot laps at LVMS.
• From Dirt to Daytona … In addition to his NEXTEL Cup and Busch Series obligations, Bowyer will race a UMP dirt late model for Dale McDowell at the 36th annual Florida DIRTcar Nationals at Volusia Speedway Park Feb. 12 - 14. Volusia is a half-mile clay oval 15 miles west of Daytona Beach on S.R. 40 in Barberville. McDowell plays an active role in RCR’s driver development program and fields cars for team owner Richard Childress’ grandsons Austin and Ty Dillon.
• Double Down … Bowyer will also race the No. 2 BB&T Chevrolet in the Orbitz 300 NASCAR Busch Series race at DIS on Saturday, Feb. 17. In addition to his duties in the Jack Daniel’s Chevrolet, Bowyer will race the BB&T Chevy in 17 Busch races this season. Autographs are limited due to time constraints and will be available on a first come, first serve basis.

The first of 36 points-paying races on the 2007 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup schedule can also be heard live on MRN and Sirius Satellite Radio. CLINT BOWYER QUOTES
After a strong rookie season that included four top fives and 11 top 10s, what are your goals for 2007?
“Our goals are to win races and get the Jack Daniel’s Chevrolet in The Chase. Bottom line is we’ve got the rookie stripe off the bumper, now it’s time to get down to business. No excuses. We’re racing to be in The Chase just like everybody else. Our performance was there last year but we struggled to get the finishes we deserved. We need to be able to capitalize on our performance this year and get the Jack Daniel’s Chevrolet not only in the Winner’s Circle but in The Chase as well.
You have an incredible record at Daytona. How come you’re so good there?
“A lot of luck. Any time you go to a superspeedway, you have to have the talent and the equipment to get to the front but you need a lot of luck to stay up there. I think I’ve earned some respect from a lot of these guys and that’s a big help when it’s time to make a move and get to the front. I love plate racing. Even when things don’t go well and I’m mad and have a long flight home, I always find something to smile about when I think about the next plate race. It’s a lot of fun for me.”
What’s new about the team this year?
“Our entire team is intact from last season. That’s what I like heading into 2007. I’m really excited about building on what we had last year and I think that’s going to be our key success this year.”
