Jeff Burton, No. 31 AT&T Chevrolet California Preview

NOTES:

This Week’s AT&T Chevrolet at California Speedway … Jeff Burton will race chassis No. 155 from the Richard Childress Racing (RCR) stable. Most recently, Burton raced this car to an eighth-place finish at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Additionally, this is the same AT&T Chevrolet Burton raced to victory at Texas Motor Speedway (started second) earlier this year. This car also saw action at California Speedway (started eighth, finished fourth), Las Vegas Motor Speedway (started fifth, finished 15th), Atlanta Motor Speedway (started 32nd, finished fourth) and Michigan International Speedway in June (started ninth, finished 24th).

Stat Facts … In 13 Cup Series starts at California Speedway, Burton has earned four top-five and five top-10 finishes. Entering the Sharp AQUOS 500, the AT&T Racing team has posted six top-five and 11 top-10 finishes and sits seventh in the championship point standings.

Magic Number … AT&T driver Jeff Burton can clinch a spot in this season’s Chase for the Cup by finishing 196 points ahead of the 13th-place driver in the championship point standings. The 2007 season will mark Burton’s second year in the Chase since its implementation for the 2005 NASCAR season.

Double Down West Coast Style … In addition to his driving duties with the No. 31 AT&T Chevrolet, Burton, a 24-time race winner in the NASCAR Busch Series, will drive RCR’s No. 29 Holiday Inn Chevrolet in the September 1 Camping World 300 presented by RVs.com. The race will air live on ESPN2 beginning at 9:30 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time (EDT) and can also be heard on the Motor Racing Network (MRN) and Sirius Satellite Radio.

California Driver … Jeff Burton isn’t the only member of the AT&T Racing team with driving experience in California. Crew chief Scott Miller was behind the wheel on six occasions at the now-defunct Riverside International Raceway from 1981-1984, with a top finish of 14th at the nine-turn road course in Southern California. Miller raced in the NASCAR Winston West Series from 1983-1986 accumulating two poles, one win and six top-five finishes.

On Air … ABC News’ special series “NASCAR in Primetime” will feature Jeff Burton and the entire AT&T Racing team this Wednesday, August 29 at 9 p.m. EDT. The nationally syndicated show will give viewers a behind-the-scenes look at the preparation, logistics, drama and competition of America’s most popular motor sport. “NASCAR in Primetime” will take an inside look at Burton’s life in the fast lane by illustrating his passion and dedication for racing in addition to the importance of having support from his family.

Four to Go … RCR has earned a Cup Series victory at 18 of the 22 tracks on the 2007 schedule. With Burton’s win earlier this season at Texas Motor Speedway, the only tracks on the current schedule where RCR hasn’t earned wins are California Speedway, Homestead-Miami Speedway, Las Vegas Motor Speedway and Kansas Speedway. Additionally, RCR has Cup Series wins at 21 tracks, the three defunct tracks being North Wilkesboro (N.C.), Riverside (Calif.) and Rockingham (N.C.).

Testing, testing … Following Burton’s 12th-place finish at Bristol, the No. 31 team traveled to the Milwaukee Mile August 27-28 for a test session in preparation for the upcoming short track races remaining on the schedule.

Meet the Press … Burton will be available outside the No. 31 AT&T transporter to field questions from the gathered media Friday, August 31 at 1:15 p.m.

Catch the Action … The Sharp AQUOS 500 at California Speedway will be televised live on Sunday, September 2 beginning at 7 p.m. EDT on ESPN. The race will also be broadcast live on MRN and Sirius Satellite Radio. Qualifying for the 25th of 36 races on the 2007 NASCAR Cup Series tour begins Friday, August 31 at 6 p.m. EDT and will be broadcast live on SPEED, MRN and Sirius Satellite Radio.

JEFF BURTON QUOTES:

California’s fall race starts during the day and runs into the night. What type of changes will you see?

“California is a fairly slick race track. It’s not a track with a tremendous amount of grip. What will end up happening is you’ll slide around a little bit during the day and when it gets darker and the track cools down, there will be more grip. That will make your car a little bit tighter or it will make it drive a little better, depending on your situation. If you’re good during the day, it might hurt it and get too tight at night. But, if your setup isn’t so good during the day, it might transfer up and be really good at night.”

On California and Richmond, the final two races before The Chase …

"At California and Richmond earlier this season, we ran very well. At Richmond, we had a fast race car. We started in the back of the field and made our way up to 15th before the engine let go. At California, we finished fourth and I know we ran well all day. I feel good about the race tracks we're going to and the team. But we've got to go make that happen and earn it. I like the tracks coming up but so do a lot of other drivers. There's nobody in the Chase that you can look at and say they don't run good at those race tracks. That's why there's a group at the top right now and they run good everywhere."

How does your points position affect the way you drive in these last two races before the Chase?

"Well, we are obviously in a position of need. We need to get ourselves in the Chase. That is goal number one. To do that, we need to have good finishes, we need to run well, we need to compete at a high level and we need to get the best finish that we can. We certainly don't want to put ourselves in a situation that we didn't have to be in because I did something silly or we had a mechanical problem. But at the same time, you have to compete at a high level. The competition is too tough. So, we are going to go out and try to win the race. If we can't win the race, then we are going to try to finish second. If we can't finish second, then we are going to try to finish third. That is what we try to do every week.”
