Jeff Burton, No. 31 Prilosec OTC Impala SS Texas Preview
NOTES:
· This Week’s Prilosec OTC Chevrolet at Texas Motor Speedway … Jeff Burton will pilot chassis No. 243 from the Richard Childress Racing (RCR) NASCAR Cup Series stable, a brand new Impala SS for the 2008 season.
· Burton in the Loop …
§ The Texas Report … In 13 starts at Texas Motor Speedway (TMS), Burton boasts two wins, two top-five and five top-10 finishes. According to NASCAR’s loop data statistics, Burton is the sport’s third-best Closer at the two-mile oval – a statistic derived from the number of positions improved over the last 10 percent of each race. Burton has gained an average of two spots over the last six events held at TMS and has improved a total of 12 positions over the closing 10 percent of those same races.
§ And Then There Were Two … Burton is one of only two drivers who have completed every lap this season. RCR teammate Kevin Harvick is the only other driver to finish all 2,048 laps of competition. Additionally, the South Boston, Va., native has completed 85.2% of the total laps (1,744 of 2,048 laps) running in the top 15 and leads all drivers with the most laps run on the lead lap (2,045 of 2,048 laps).
§ Good Start, Impressive Finish … Over the season’s first six races, Burton has earned one win, three top-five and four top-10 finishes. He currently holds a 19.2 starting average coupled with an impressive 7.3 finishing average. Burton has yet to finish outside the top 15 this season.
§ Points Check … Burton advanced to the top spot in NASCAR’s championship point standings after his third-place finish last weekend at Martinsville Speedway. The 20-time Cup Series race winner leads Harvick by 39 markers, marking the first time in RCR’s illustrious history that Childress-led cars are first and second in the NASCAR Cup Series point standings.
§ How this All Stacks Up … Burton currently sits seventh (99.4) in NASCAR’s Driver Rating category. The Driver Rating is a formula that combines the following categories: wins, finishes, top-15 finishes, average running position while on the lead lap, average speed under green, fastest lap, most laps led and lead-lap finishes. The maximum points a driver can earn in each race is 150 points. The Driver Rating number is used pre-race as a prediction tool and post-race as a performance evaluator.
· Inaugural Winner … Jeff Burton won the inaugural NASCAR Cup Series race held at Texas Motor Speedway on April 6, 1997, capturing his first NASCAR Cup Series win. Additionally, the South Boston, Va., native became the track’s first repeat winner when he took the checkers last spring at TMS.
· Change of Scenery … Prilosec OTC’s major associate sponsorship of RCR’s No. 31 Chevrolet Impala SS kicks into high gear this weekend in Texas as Burton and the No. 31 team transform their bright orange No. 31 AT&T Chevrolet into a purple Prilosec OTC racing machine for the Samsung 500. Prilosec OTC, marketed exclusively by Procter & Gamble, is available in food, drug, mass, and club stores in the U.S. Prilosec OTC is available over-the-counter for the treatment of frequent heartburn, with one pill taken every day for 14 days and is the No. 1 selling over-the-counter heartburn medication.
· Double Down in the Lone Star State … In addition to his driving duties with the No. 31 Prilosec OTC Chevrolet, Burton, a 27-time race winner in the NASCAR Nationwide Series, will drive RCR’s No. 29 Holiday Inn Chevrolet in the O’Reilly 300 Saturday, April 5. The race will air live on ESPN2 beginning at 3 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time (EDT) and will also broadcast worldwide on the Performance Racing Network (PRN) and Sirius Satellite Radio.

Prior to TMS’s inaugural season, Childress, a former driver in NASCAR’s top division, earned a pair of top 10s while he was still behind the wheel at the now defunct Texas World Speedway in College Station.
· Help Chevy Help Autism … Autism Speaks and Chevrolet announced a month-long promotion to help generate up to $1 million for the non-profit organization and create greater awareness of autism, a disorder that is now diagnosed in one in every 150 children. During Autism Awareness Month, people who visit the Autism Speaks website, www.autismspeaks.org, can click on the “Help Chevy Help Autism” icon and take a free virtual test drive of the 2008 North American Car of the Year – the all-new Chevy Malibu. Chevrolet has committed to a minimum contribution of $500,000, but every virtual test drive taken gets Chevrolet closer to its goal of donating up to $1 million to Autism Speaks to support its mission of increasing awareness of autism and raising money to fund autism research. JEFF BURTON QUOTES:
What are your feelings on racing the Impala SS at Texas?
“I think there are a lot of challenges at Texas. Texas is a little rougher track than some of the others we run on. With this car, the bumps seem to be a pretty major issue so I think Texas is going to be quite a challenge with this car. Some teams are going to hit and some teams aren’t. The success we had there last year is thrown out the window. None of that information will be worth a hoot so we’re starting over again.”
Will that make practice at Texas more critical?
“It makes it exceptionally important. The key to our sport is taking the time that you have to do anything that you are doing and doing it efficiently. If you have an hour practice, you have to use that hour of practice better than your competition. The teams that can do that are the teams that continually have success. Being efficient with your time is really important. That’s going to be like that all year with this car. Well, it’s like that with every car but I think it’s going to be even more important because we’re trying to learn so much in a short time.”
What are the keys to winning at Texas?
“I won the first one and ran really well in the first few races there and then I really had a lull. The lull was because that type of race track was just not the type of track we could do well on for awhile. Corner speed is the key element to winning at Texas. The place is really fast and it’s fast because the corners generate a lot of speed. Having a fast car and good track position is real important. It’s hard to pass there. The winner is the driver who can get through the corner the best.”
Talk about holding a spot in the top 12 in points through the season’s first six races.
“We have gotten off to a solid start but we definitely have some room to grow. Every race that we ran and have finished in the top 10, we have truly been a top 10 car. We’ve been a solid top 10 team but we want to be a top four team. We want to lead laps and the lead the most laps in races. We’ve had a slow start to accomplish that but we’re early in some development, as every team is, but there is a lot of growing left to do. We didn’t do that well last year – grow as some of the other teams did – and it showed when the Chase started. We have to focus on what’s ahead of us so we can stay in the top 12 in points.”
