Preseason Thunder at Daytona International Speedway Kicks Off Today
January 10, 2013
NASCAR Sprint Cup Series competitors return to action today at Daytona International Speedway for Preseason Thunder. This includes Richard Childress Racing’s three full-time Sprint Cup Series teams and the addition of the No. 33 entry with Austin Dillon behind the wheel. The highlight of the week includes the first testing of the “Gen 6” Sprint Cup Series cars at the 2.5-mile superspeedway.
Over the course of three days, crew chiefs Slugger Labbe (No. 27 Menards Chevrolet SS), Gil Martin (No. 29 Budweiser/Jimmy John’s/Rheem Chevrolet SS), Luke Lambert (No. 31 Caterpillar/Cheerios Chevrolet SS), Danny Stockman (No. 33 Cheerios Chevrolet SS) and their respective teams will set up shop inside the garage area and gather data in preparation for the 55th running of the Daytona 500 in February. Testing the new 2013 Chevrolet SS will have every driver, crew chief and crew member engrossed in the information that is produced. Hoping to add the first 2013 trophy to the shelf, each team will focus their attention on developing setups that will make their cars run faster.
RCR teams are proven winners at the historic speedway with Dale Earnhardt’s emotional win in the 1998 Daytona 500 and Kevin Harvick’s triumph in the ‘Great American Race,’ which followed eight years later. Most recently, Harvick drove the No. 29 Chevrolet to Victory Lane in back-to-back Sprint Unlimited exhibition events (2009 and 2010).
Drivers Jeff Burton, Dillon, Harvick and Paul Menard will take to the track each day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern Time with a scheduled one-hour lunch break in between. All four drivers will also participate in the annual Preseason Thunder Fan Fest on Thursday, Jan. 10.
