Richard Childress Racing Crew Member Spotlight
Andrew (Big Country) Harris, No. 62 Camping World Truck Series Tire Specialist & Gas Man
When you walk into the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series garage you’ll meet crew members from all walks of life; those who have dreamed of working in the sport since they were young children and those who stumbled into the sport after taking a leap of faith. The latter is how Andrew Harris, mechanic, tire specialist and gas man for the No. 62 Richard Childress Racing Truck Series team, found himself a spot within the motorsports industry.
Raised in a small Ohio farm town, Harris grew up raising show cattle, hunting, fishing and playing high school football. Following high school graduation, Harris and a friend packed their bags and took a leap of faith moving to Mooresville, N.C., on a whim in 2004.
Once in North Carolina, the Waueson, Ohio, native enrolled at PIT (Performance Instruction & Training) school and began to learn all the aspects of being a pit crew member. During his schooling Harris, known to his team as Big Country, worked at Richard Petty Racing as a developmental pit crew member and also cleaned parts at the shop.
In 2005, the NASCAR newcomer secured a full-time position as a tire specialist and mechanic traveling with the No. 45 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series team and driver Kyle Petty. Following a few years of working in NASCAR’s premier series, Harris made the switch to the Camping World Trucks Series and began working for RCR in 2010.
In 2009, while hanging out at the Fulton County Fair back home, fate once again placed Harris in the right place at the right time. The former 4-H King was reunited with an old high school friend, Jamie, who had once turned him down for a date when they were teenagers. The two began dating and married in December of 2011. The couple now resides in Lexington, N.C.
Even though the NASCAR life keeps Harris busy, he always makes time to enjoy the outdoors and continues to be an avid hunter and fisherman.
