Crew Member Profile: No. 3 Front Tire Carrier/Tire Specialist Dustin Keath

Dustin Keath, front tire carrier and tire specialist of the No. 3 AdvoCare Chevrolet driven by Austin Dillon, worked as an electrician in Pennsylvania before deciding a career in auto racing could suit him well. He worked his way up the racing ladder by volunteering with various dirt late model teams in his spare time, eventually moving to North Carolina to pursue his dream. He worked at Team Dillon Racing before joining Richard Childress Racing, and currently works as the tire specialist and front tire carrier on the No. 3 AdvoCare Chevrolet in the NASCAR Nationwide Series.

Who’s your favorite driver you’ve worked with:  “I think Tim McCreadie is my favorite driver, so far, because he got me into the sport and into full-time racing. I was working as an electrician in Pennsylvania and he tried to hire me when I was looking for a job. I never actually ended up working for Tim, but his team was very influencial in my career path. They gave me gas money to get me into races and helped me make the decision to chase my dreams to turn full-time racing into a career.”

Favorite stories from the road: “This year when we went to Mid-Ohio Sports Car Club, the No. 3 team competed on a go-kart course after tech one day. I ended up winning and have bragging rights for the rest of the season. It seems like such a simple thing, but that little extra-curricular activity was huge for me. That win was awesome because all of the guys on our team have a prior racing history as drivers and I have never raced before. I have a lot of other good stories from the road, but most of them can’t be published.”

How is it balancing family and being on the road: “It’s tough, it’s hard to do. I think the hardest part of having a family and a racing career is figuring out how to balance your time. In this sport you’re supposed to give everything you have on your race team, but you have to give 100 percent towards your family, too, or else you won’t get to watch your kids grow up. I have three kids. A little girl, who will be five years old on September 22, and twin boys who will be four years old in March. My wife, Amber, and I will be married six years in December. Two beagles make up our family, as well.”

What’s your favorite movie: “The Blues Brothers.”

Favorite Music: “Rock n’ Roll.”

If you weren’t working in NASCAR, what would you be doing: “I would be working on Dirt Late Models.”

Best moment in your career: “So far, the best moment in my career, hands down, was winning the inaugural NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at Eldora Speedway in June. I’ve been to that track so many times in my life and have never won, so it was such a special moment to be able to win there.”
