From the Pit Box: Phoenix International Raceway

Shane Wilson returns as crew chief for driver Brendan Gaughan in 2014. The pair will compete for the NASCAR Nationwide Series championship in the No. 62 South Point Hotel & Casino Chevrolet Camaro.
In 2013, Wilson led Gaughan and the No. 62 team in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. The duo collected 10 top-five and 13 top-10 finishes en route to a seventh-place result in the driver championship point standings.
Last weekend, Wilson directed Gaughan and the No. 62 team to a sixth place finish in the NASCAR Nationwide Series season opener at Daytona International Speedway.
Q: How do you set the No. 62 Chevrolet Camaro up for Phoenix International Raceway?
A: “We are setting up our Chevrolet by referencing Nationwide setups from previous years at Phoenix International Raceway. We improve upon those past setups by taking in-race driver comments and NASCAR loop data.”
Q: How does the track change during the race?
A: "How the track changes is a lot like a moving target. There are so many things that come in to play and dictate those changes. The weather will always play a key role in the changes that are happening during the race. Whether it is overcast or sunny, those types of things will change the track and decide the adjustments that we have to make.”
Q: What is/are the key(s) to success at this track?
A: “After the repave at Phoenix, tires have become very crucial. The tire is fairly hard which results in tire falloff, so it becomes a major track position race. Track position races always make qualifying that much more important.”
Q: What is your favorite race memory of Phoenix International Raceway?
A: “It definitely has to be winning the Friday night NASCAR Nationwide Series race in 2006, but maybe we can make a new one this weekend with the No. 62 team.”
