Crew Member Profile: Hutchens, Haney, Smith

We like to do things in sets of three at Richard Childress Racing, so for this week’s crew member profile, it’s three for the price of one as we’re featuring these members of the No. 3 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series program – lead engineer Grant Hutchens, car chief Chad Haney and mechanic/fueler Bryan Smith.


Grant Hutchens
Hometown: Omaha, Nebraska
Resides: Salisbury, N.C.
Marital Status: Married to Hollie
How long have you been in racing: “I’ve been working for a race team for nine years.”
Hobbies: “Dirt Late Models, Working Outdoors and Hunting.”
Favorite Sports Team(s): “Nebraska Cornhuskers Football.”
Most memorable racing moment: “It’s tough to pick just one most memorable favorite racing moment. Things that stick out in my mind include winning the pole for the Daytona 500 this year with Austin Dillon, winning the Brickyard 400 with Paul Menard and winning the Coca-Cola 600 with Kevin Harvick. Each memory was really special.”
How did you get into racing? “I raced street stocks in Nebraska and got a really great opportunity to work in racing right out of college.”
What was your dream job growing up? “My dream job growing up was to work on racecars.”
Childhood hero: “Dale Earnhardt.”
Favorite restaurant on the road: “Raul and Theresa’s in Phoenix.”
If you could pick a song, what would be your Bristol intro song? “Crazy Horse by Black Label Society.”
Best part about working with Austin Dillon? “Never a dull moment.”
 
 
Chad Haney
Hometown: Fairmont, W.V.
Resides: Lexington, N.C.
Marital Status: Married to Buffy
Children: Son, Cameron
How long have you been in racing: “I’ve been working for a race team for 25 years.”
Hobbies: “In my spare time, I enjoy ATV-ing with my son, Cameron.”
Favorite Sports Team(s): “Alabama Football.”
Most memorable racing moment: “Winning the Coca-Cola 600 in 2013.”
How did you get into racing? “My dad took me to the races as a child.”
What was your dream job growing up? “To work in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.”
Childhood hero: “Dale Earnhardt.”
Favorite restaurant on the road: “Tiacori’s Mexican restaurant in Daytona.”
If you could pick a song, what would be your Bristol intro song? “'Your Love' by the Outfield.”
Toughest part about your job? “The toughest part about my job is Fridays at the racetrack. It’s just a really tough day at the track to switch between practice and qualifying and set the car up for everything that we need to accomplish.”
Best part about working with Austin Dillon? “The best part about working with Austin is his drive to succeed.”
 
Bryan Smith
Hometown: Hendersonville, N.C.
Resides: Mooresville, N.C.
Marital Status: Single
How long have you been in racing: “I’ve been working for a race team for 23 years.”
Hobbies: “Hunting, fishing, golf, riding Harley-Davidson motorcycles.”
Favorite Sports Team(s): “University of North Carolina Tarheels and Oregon Ducks.”
Most memorable racing moment: “Winning the NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Dover International Speedway in 2006 with Jeff Burton. It was my first win as a car chief.”
How did you get into racing? “I followed by father into it.”
What was your dream job growing up? “To become a racecar driver or a fighter pilot.”
Childhood hero: “Dale Earnhardt and my dad.”
Favorite restaurant on the road: “In ‘n Out Burger.”
If you could pick a song, what would be your Bristol intro song? “Strokers Theme by Charlie Daniels Band.”
Toughest part about your job?  “The toughest part about my job is the travel and early mornings.”
Best part about working with Austin Dillon? “The best part about working with Austin is that he brings an energy and attitude that makes racing fun, and it’s fun to see him improve.”
