Crew Member Spotlight: Joe McHone

Joe McHone is the Interior Specialist for the No. 3 Nationwide Series team.

Joe McHone remembers when Ty Dillon was still in grade school, racing Legends and Bandolero cars at the local tracks on the East Coast. He has followed Ty and older brother Austin Dillon through their respective ranks from 2005 until today. The 33-year-old, Winston-Salem-native relishes his memories with the Dillon Brothers – he thinks it’s been a fun ride watching the rising stars make their way through the ranks of NASCAR.

McHone currently is the Interior Specialist for the No. 3 Nationwide Series team. For the past two seasons, he worked primarily at the Welcome, N.C.-based shop on the No. 3 Bass Pro Shops Chevrolet Silverado. Prior to that, McHone was a member of the 2011 ARCA Series championship team, with driver Ty Dillon. That season the team won seven races, including three consecutive.

Outside of racing, McHone enjoys hanging out with friends, playing basketball and during the winter months, snow boarding.

How did you get into racing?
I guess just being at the right place at the right time. I knew a guy, that knew a guy. I think it’s funny how things like that worked out. When Mike (Dillon, VP of Competition) wanted to grow RCR’s developmental team, I was fortunate enough to be a part of that.

Do you enjoy working for Richard Childress Racing?
I do. I’ve been fortunate enough to be a part of this program for a very long time. I worked my way up through the ranks, just like Austin and Ty. I’ve had some memories and made some friends here that are invaluable.

What is your favorite memory from racing?
It has to be a few weeks ago at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. That was such an awesome win, and I’ll never forget it. We had a great car that day. To win at such a historic track like IMS, it’s special. Other than that, the seven wins we had in ARCA in 2011 were cool. We won at Talladega, which was neat.

You’ve been in a lot of different roles at RCR, do you prefer one over the other?
Not really, I’m just blessed to be working here and a part of such a great company. The Dillon and Childress family has been great to me. I like working at the shop, I enjoy traveling to the race tracks, and I enjoy the fast-paced environment of racing.
