Austin Dillon’s hopes for a first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship were continued Sunday afternoon at Dover International Speedway, as the driver of the No. 3 AAA Chevrolet was able to make the cut and advance to the next round of the Chase for the Sprint Cup.
Earning his 11th top-10 finish of the 2016 season, Dillon finished eighth and was 11 points above the 12th-place Chase cutoff.
“We have been working hard as a team and I have been working hard as a driver to make myself better,” said Dillon. “This series is very tough and I think the biggest thing was not giving up. We could have given up in that second practice yesterday when it was raining and drizzling. I got frustrated and just tried to calm myself and believe in what we were doing as a team. Man, we got it done.”
The second round of the Chase kicks off next weekend at Charlotte Motor Speedway, before heading to Kansas Speedway and wrapping up at Talladega Superspeedway. While he is pleased to advance to the next round, Dillon is motivated to keep going and advance to the Round of 8.
“It’s time to knock some more of these guys out because we’ve got this opportunity and I want to say that we’re going to be the underdog in this next round, so let’s go do it,” he said.
