The hot start to the 2018 season continued Friday at Atlanta Motor Speedway for Richard Childress Racing, as Ryan Newman qualified second in the No. 31 Liberty National Chevrolet Camaro ZL1. Less than a week after earning a top-10 finish in a race in which teammate Austin Dillon scored the victory, Newman advanced through the three rounds of qualifying and put an RCR Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 near the top of the speed charts.
“We’ve got a good racecar with our Liberty National Life Insurance Chevrolet,” said Newman. “Obviously, the Camaro is strong out of the box, but wish we could have got that pole for them as well as us.
“I’ve got to thank Liberty National Life Insurance for jumping on board and sponsoring our Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 this weekend,” he said. “We’ll just keep digging. We’ve got a good race car and we’ll hopefully have some fun this weekend.”
Following his whirlwind week touring the country as the Daytona 500 champion, it was back to business for Austin Dillon Friday in Atlanta. Dillon’s No. 3 Dow Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 was bumped from the top 24 in the final seconds of Round 1 of qualifying. The Daytona 500 champion will roll off 25th in Sunday’s race.
“I think I’m ready for a nap. It’s been a long week. But our Dow Chevy is fine,” said Dillon. “We started 19th here last year and were running third when our alternator went out. So, I’m really excited about this place. It’s a long run track and qualifying really sets you up a little bit for pit stalls and stuff like that, but we’re all good.
“We’re locked-in right now and we’ve just got to go to work tomorrow in our practice session and see what we can do,” he said. “Newman is fast and that’s good to see and to work off of our teammates.”
