Josh Walter’s path to NASCAR has been a unique one. He didn’t grow up in motorsports, but has always been attracted to what the sport has to offer. Walter formerly served as a mechanic in the United States Air Force at the Dover Air Force Base. He was able to meet people within the NASCAR community during his time in the military which helped him tremendously in his journey from active military service to becoming a full-time racing employee in civilian life. Walter worked part-time for the NASCAR Racing Experience while at Dover Air Force Base, which led him to the opportunity to get hands-on experience with race cars, allowing him to learn as much as he could about how to work on them. That one NASCAR Racing Experience job was essential in helping him learn and get to where he is today, at Richard Childress Racing as a tire & interior specialist. Walter states, ““I’ve watched racing my whole life and always wanted to be involved with the sport one way or another.” Currently, Walter spends most of his time at RCR’s race shop, located in Welcome, North Carolina, working with the NASCAR Xfinity Series teams preparing cars for the upcoming race weekends. Walter travels specifically with the No. 21 team each weekend, as a member of the road crew. Walter handles all of Austin Hill’s driver needs inside the car as well as prepping tires at the track. Walter and the No. 21 Chevrolet team have visited victory lane twice this season, and are hoping for more.
“Winning at Daytona International Speedway and Atlanta Motor Speedway was such an amazing feeling for me,” said Walter. “Being able to come to Welcome and work for Richard Childress Racing is a huge accomplishment for me. I grew up watching Dale Earnhardt and the No. 3 GM Goodwrench team and the fact that I get to come to work here every day and work in this building, it’s surreal.”
Surreal, but real. Walter is living out his dream after dedicating years of his life serving our country in the United States Air Force. RCR is thankful for Walter’s service and the continued support and hard work dedicated to the No. 21 Xfinity Series team.
